Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very good plus. 1st Edition. [20pp mimeo]: JULY 77 [10pp] & NOV 77 [10pp]; each stapled upper left; 280 x 215 mm. Two issues from the rebirth of the couple's mail-list little mag (the previous incarnation confined to a single number, July 1971). The first (dated July 77) -- which opens with an excerpt from co-editor Jeff Weinstein's, 'Fame Queen' (3pp) & closes with John Perreault's 'Surfer Food' (2pp) -- includes extracts from Hannah Weiner's journal (2pp). The second (dated Nov 77 & postmarked 14 Nov) opens with a 4pp excerpt from Kathy Acker's incendiary novel, 'Blood & Guts in High School' (possibly the first appearance of the book that would ultimately become her highspot). The issue also includes an excerpt from 'Pleasure' by Barbara Baracks (2pp), 'Anna' by Ira Joel Haber, & 'Getting Away from It' by John Perreault (an excerpt from Hotel Death, Part Two). Addressed in ink to Victor Coleman at A SPACE in Toronto, both issues bear cancelled postage stamps (upper right) & have a crease across (where folded for mailing). Evidently produced in extremely small editions: their existence having escaped notice beyond a single reference in WorldCat (OCLC No 14075728), where the earlier issue is mistakenly recorded as a book by Jeff Weinstein (coincidentally issued July 1977), with its title, 'Fame Queen', transcribed from the second page (where his 'Fame Queen' excerpt begins in the present July issue). Incisive New York art critic, poet, editor, curator & artist, John Perreault (1934-2015) met author, editor, restaurant critic & curator, Jeff Weinstein (b.1944), shortly before the first issue of ONLY PROSE appeared (July 1971), marrying him in 2008. Preeminent Toronto poet, editor, printer, publisher, curator & all-round cultural maven, Victor Coleman (b.1944), had published John Perreault's long poem Harry (1974), as one of the last titles he edited while managing Coach House Press (1967-74). On becoming Artistic Director of A SPACE gallery the same year, he brought William Burroughs to town for his first reading north -- followed by David Byrne, Ed Dorn, Jonathan Williams & ultimately (with the Rumour co-op, who would go on to publish Kathy Goes to Haiti, at his urging) Kathy Acker, to name only a few -- doing more to infuse life into the arts in Canada than any other individual New Wave spark-plug. The earlier issue is nearly fine, while the later bears two large (though light) cup-stains on face. Two little-known publications bearing seminal association.
